Chimney Caps
Chimney Caps play an integral role in all chimney systems, be it Wood, gas or pellet. If you have a chimney, you do need a cap. Here's the breakdown of cap functions:

Caps Keep Out Intruders!

Chimneys  attract animals that seek shelter, a place to nest, have babies or are just looking for heat. Larger chimneys can fit a family of raccoons, others can house squirrels, bats or birds that can make it all the way into your home. These critters carry bacteria that do not mix well with humans.

Caps Prevent water damage

Cap absence means that rain or snow may freely enter and cause severe internal damage over time. Water damage is all the more dangerous, because it is usually out of sight. Moisture can deteriorate flue tile joints, corrode the piping or make it into the firebox and create more seemingly invisible corrosion that can weaken the fireplace walls and pose a risk of a house fire.

Caps help in case of a Chimney Fire

The lid of a chimney cap can greatly prevent the chimney fire's flames from reaching high possibly towards the trees. Every chimney cap should also be equipped with a Spark Arrester to help prevent sparks from exiting the flue.

Different Kinds of Caps

Crown  and Chase Covers
Crown and chase Cover protects the larger exterior of the chimney top from water intrusion. Without such Cover, water errodes the masonry surface causing microscopic cracks. These cracks fill up with water that later freezes and expands, that in turn make the cracks wider and deeper and invites more water. If not stopped, this vicious Freeze and Thaw cycle will eventually cause your chimney to fall apart. Although the damage may be invisible from the ground, loosened pieces may fall down anytime and cause property damage or serious injury.

Similarly, a wooden chimney chase will need a chase cover to protect it from rotting caused by the water. The water entering a wooden chase may also easily make it down and damage the appliance.

Protecting your chimney now is much cheaper than rebuilding it later!
